Online learning doesn’t need to be distanced learning.

“We’re really grateful to Beyond Creative Education for the support they’ve given B. The online learning is helping him stay engaged and achieve his certificates. So proud of how far he’s come.”

However they felt to me at the time (winces in turmoil), the twists and turns of experiences in my career so far have shaped the way things happen now (smiles widely).

Being practical in my bones didn't lend itself to teaching and training remotely nearly six years ago - but now it's become my new favourite way to hook-in those young people Not Yet Reached.

This drama teacher stands corrected - you can be practical, vivid, and most importantly, connected, in a remote little setting.

Many young people, especially those with mental health issues and/or SEND, recall remote teaching in a negative light because it was thrust upon us all suddenly and without preparation in 2020. Since the pandemic many online learning providers have taken that model for remote instruction and used it to construct a way of providing one-way activities to be completed online.

This is where BCE’s online offer is different and so it engages learners who have been wary until now. It’s not about standalone activities. Nothing generic, no easy time-fillers, nothing you’re left to get on with unsupervised unless you press the ‘call teacher’ button. Instead, our online learning pathway is guided, assisted, supported and designed specifically for the unique learner/s in their personalised Google Classroom.

Our remote learning offer is designed in the same way as an in-person lesson - with a maximum of four individuals in mind and their experiences, aspirations and strengths setting the direction of the lesson.

Every online lesson is led by the young person’s key adult who is based at our Ashburton studios and they meet in person half-termly, minimum. Live feedback, support and challenge along with real-time intervention, genuine interactions and relevant next steps are all at the centre of an online lesson with BCE.

Flipped learning, project-based awards, individual sessions, work-based briefs, academic certificates, creative communication skills and team working collaborations all make our online provision the thing to bring the most isolated young people together and back into belonging somewhere safe and special.

Online learning is different at BCE... Here's how:

Through practical, creative and expressive lessons, children can be a part of something, even when not in the building.

Not making something that will be helpful to children with SEND, simply because nobody has made it before, is no reason not to make it.

It’s simply not acceptable to use the words ‘Make Them’, when it comes to Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance.
