A new way to work together

A new way to work together -

For young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs or Disabilities) health issues, EBSNA (Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance) there are limited places where they feel that they belong and can begin to settle in to love learning again. BCE’s independent special school makes high quality teaching and learning, life-skill development and vocational aspirations, as well as a wonderful place to learn in every day, a reality for young people who have not been reached until now.

We have seen young people with health issues, SEND and EBSNA left in a void between being unable to get to school consistently, and being unable to engage in any alternative offer that matches their specific needs and has high expectations for their potential outcomes. This is where our specialist education setting and new ways of working together fit - not as a holding pen, but as a steady stream that is well equipped and understands the ways in which learners with health issues can be helped into a place to learn and thrive in.

Beyond Creative Education is a consistent and steady pathway. Our independent special school can flex to lead children who have previously struggled to attend on a learning journey where the doors do not close behind them and the options are broad during their time in education with us.

Our Unique Curriculum

We understand that every young person’s start point is unique, so we deliver an inclusive curriculum that will maximise their chances of catching up now and engagement in future.

BCE’s project-based curriculum is designed with skill and care for each young person. By listening carefully to learners, working in partnership with them, their families, schools and other professionals, BCE ensures that opportunity and the ability to prepare for adulthood, return to education or transition towards a suitable alternative becomes possible.

The skills learnt and practised through creative, academic and life learning activities equip learners with the tools and mindset to make the next steps in their life-learning journey.

Our learning place

Set in the heart of Ashburton, our warm welcoming studios are perfectly set for providing a small, quiet, supportive, and structured reconnection with education and life skills. Surrounded by nature and community, we model high expectations for development and mutual trust, to make reconnection with learning and society accessible. Opening doors, hearts and minds to the possibility of being included in a world that may currently feel out of reach is our goal for all learners. At BCE, learning begins with a carefully planned integration to a bespoke learning pathway which listens to the young person, their family and the professionals supporting them, to remove the barriers to learning and introduce belonging.

Teaching, learning and belonging.

The purpose and vision for BCE is grounded in creativity and exploration as a means for engaging and sustaining learners who have not yet been reached in other settings. These young people are passionate about and motivated by one area – the creative and expressive arts – which is why they are likely to be referred to BCE instead of other local alternative independent settings.

A strengths-based approach.

BCE’s strengths-based approach to learning, teaching and belonging is what activates engagement and motivation in our learners. Through creative and expressive means, we promote a return to loving learning and finding a place to do just that in. BCE’s creative, expressive, vocational and aspirational ethos is what facilitates improved attainment across all subject areas. By generating a passion for the arts, we ignite an interest in and enthusiasm for learning in a broader sense which is threaded throughout our unique curriculum offer.

Making a Referral

Anyone playing a key role in supporting a child or young person can make a referral to BCE (schools and officers must have consent from the child’s parent or carer). Referrals must come from an organisation, parent or carer who has the agreement of the fee payer in writing. Schools, parents, carers, specialists, and local authority officers can request and complete our Referral Form, then submit it as an email attachment to office@beyondcreativeeducation.org . Please use the candidate’s initials, date of birth and ‘Referral’ in the email subject box. We will endeavour to review referrals within 5 working days. Once a placement is agreed, we will ask for any additional information that will help us to plan a graduated response and bespoke package, then confirm the start date.
